Case study Lymington Shores Balcony Units

Major homebuilder Redrow turned to the expertise of Bison Precast for the construction of its prestigious waterfront development of Lymington Shores in Hampshire.

This collection of luxury apartments, penthouses and villas, situated on the edge of Lymington marina with views of the Solent, features several curved, wave-effect concrete balconies.

The developer’s original plan was to cast the balconies onsite. However, due to time constraints, Redrow approached Bison Precast’s concrete specialists to provide 110 precast curved concrete units to help complete the project to plan.

Bob Mullen, Senior Projects Manager for Redrow Homes, said, “Once we’d provided the specification to the team at Bison Precast, their turn-around on their balcony units was extremely fast, and when the units arrived onsite site they fit our build like a glove.”

Members of Bison Precast’s design team visited the Lymington site to ensure that the precast units were designed to the exact specification, with holes for drainage in the correct places and fully water-tight, so there was no need to use a membrane. Chris Rose, Senior Project Designer at Bison Precast’s Hoveringham facility, said, “The original cast-on-site option was proving costly and time consuming for the client, so we suggested a precast solution using special moulds for the curved precast balconies to speed up the process and help deliver the project on time.

“We also provided separate structural lintels and a large arch feature for the development, as well as over 12,000 m² of hollowcore and 120 m³ of precast concrete stairs.

Bob Mullen concluded: “I’d never used Bison Precast for a purpose-made project before, but I wouldn’t hesitate in using them again and would recommend them to other developers working on similar builds.”
