Measham school children awarded for their health and safety projects

Four lucky pupils from Measham C of E Primary School have been presented with prizes for their recently completed Safety Squad projects, a schools engagement project from building products manufacturer Forterra.

The initiative links local schools and Forterra’s manufacturing plants around the country to promote awareness of health and safety in the work, school and home environments.

Earlier this year an excited group of 30 Key Stage 1 pupils, age seven and eight, from Measham Primary School visited the Measham brickworks and Red Bank factory in Leicestershire for an educational tour highlighting how to make safety a priority.

Following their visit, the pupils and teachers of Measham Primary School embarked on their health and safety journey, completing tasks in alignment with Forterra’s “Golden Rules” that would inform and solidify the students’ learning.

The children learned about the history of bricks and the processes involved in making them, conducting their own safety evaluation at home or in their classroom and creating their very own STOP sign design to add to the safety signage in the factory.

Students, Rocco, Ivy, Jessica and Lucas were selected as the prize winners due to the high standard of their work. They each received a book token for their efforts and the school received a token for the library for taking part in the Safety Squad scheme. The winning STOP sign will be turned into an actual sign that will be used in Forterra’s Measham brickworks plant.

Measham brickworks’ Production Manager Matthew Lardner and Engineering Co-ordinator Shaun Hickling visited the school to present the children with their prizes.

Matthew said: “It was our pleasure to give out the prizes to the pupils and teachers of Measham Primary School for their hard work. It was great to see how much the children have learnt about health and safety and we look forward to seeing the STOP sign up in the factory.”

Laura Beighton, teacher at Measham Primary School said: “Safety Squad is a fantastic way of engaging the children and incorporating their learning with real-life scenarios. Thank you so much to all the Forterra team for their continued support, the children were thrilled to have their work recognised and awarded.”
