Case study Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School

Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School is a £20 million development built on the outskirts of Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland.

The new building replaces the previous one which was determined unsuitable for remodelling and is designed to cater for 875 pupils and over 100 staff.

Northern Ireland Education Minister Caitriona Ruane officially opened the new school which offers an effective space for learning and sets the highest standards for school and community facilities.

The use of Forterra’s County Multi Smooth red facing bricks incorporated within the external fabric of the building complements the clean and sharp design of the building providing an even colour blend and finish.

The brickwork contributed greatly to the scheme, particularly to the prominent entrance area which is beautifully framed by a projecting library and oratory.

The eye is drawn to the accuracy and execution of the craftsmanship used to produce and lay the special shaped bricks, which were supplied from Forterra’s Wilnecote factory in Staffordshire.

In total, the building extends to almost 12,000 square metres of accommodation over three floors providing high quality teaching space and enviable sports facilities.
