Wonderwall system overview

Wonderwall is a lightweight, brick slip cladding system that combines the advantages of modern construction techniques with the appeal of traditional brickwork.

Quicker to install than traditional masonry, Wonderwall provides a durable, decorative and thermally insulating finish to external vertical walls for a wide variety of developments, from new build housing and commercial buildings through to local authority, educational and refurbishment projects.

The system comprises a rigid phenolic insulation panel pre-bonded to a brickwork coordinating carrier sheet. This composite panel is then fixed to the substructure on site, and brick slips are bonded to the carrier sheet using a purpose-made adhesive. It can be fixed against almost any substrate, including steel, timber and masonry.

Wonderwall installation

Forterra’s Wonderwall lightweight cladding system is fast and easy to install. A rigid insulation panel with pre-formed brickwork carrier sheet is fixed to a suitable substrate and brick slips are then added to the carrier sheet using a purpose-made adhesive. A specialist pointing mortar completes the installation.

Tested and Certified

Wonderwall is extensively tested, including hygrothermal accelerated ageing, resistance to wind load, brick slip pull-off strength, impact, fatigue and fire. Its performance is also independently certified by BBA.

Thickness and Thermal

The reduced thickness of Wonderwall (typically ~50mm) and inbuilt thermal resistance means that improved U-values can be achieved with a thinner wall compared with traditional brickwork. This in turn makes it possible to realise a greater internal floor area for a given newbuild footprint or to increase performance without vastly increasing the wall thickness on an existing building. The phenolic insulation incorporated in the Wonderwall system provides greater thermal resistance per unit thickness than EPS, XPS or Polyurethane, and improved fire performance.

Ease of Installation

Installation is critical to the quality of any walling system, however, because Wonderwall does not require trained bricklayers, the system can be installed efficiently by a team of only two people (only one person is required for the brick slip application). Practical, on-site training is included with every order to ensure a quality and compliant installation.

Reduced weight

Often weighing less than 50kg/m2 (dependent on insulation thickness and brick type) – which is less than one-third that of traditional brickwork – Wonderwall requires reduced structural support making it ideal for tricky areas such as stepped gable ends.

Durable

Unlike other similar systems, the unique Wonderwall track sheet provides drainage routes to ensure water is not trapped adjacent to the adhesive, preventing degradation and ensuring long-term performance. Following analysis of the system, test data, and a review of the Forterra quality processes, the BBA advises that Wonderwall will achieve a service life of not less than 30 years.

Design compatibility

Any 65mm-high F2 rated brick can be incorporated, at slip thicknesses from 18mm to 30mm. This allows architectural detailing, such as dental and string courses, to be created. Soldier courses and various bond patterns and mortar joint profiles can also be incorporated quickly and easily.

System flexibility

Wonderwall can be fixed to existing, newbuild or modular structures that use lightweight metal frames, masonry, dense concrete or timber frame. All substrates are covered by our BBA certificate for complete peace of mind.
