Project: A483/A489 Newtown Bypass

As part of a huge, £95 million scheme to reduce traffic congestion in Newtown while opening up land in mid-Wales for future development, Bison Precast has provided its largest ever single order of Omnia Bridge Deck, for Alun Griffiths working on behalf of the Welsh Government.

Nearly 3,000m² of precast concrete panels were produced in seven stages at Bison Precast’s Somercotes facility near Derby, one stage for each of the bridges, which span various locations along the 6.5km ‘2+1’ carriageway route. The single road bridge over the Dolfor Valley is the largest of the seven bridges, spanning 80 metres and made up of 1170m² Omnia Bridge Deck panels.

Mark Sheppard, Major Projects Manager for Bison Precast, said, “Our team of experts designed all the bridge deck systems and began manufacturing the panels in July 2016. Though work was swift, it was not continuous, starting and stopping in reaction to the contractor’s onsite requirements, ensuring maximum efficiency as the project progressed over two years.”

Jeff Wheeler, Structures Agent for Alun Griffiths, said, “Having worked with Bison Precast before, and having used their Omnia Bridge Deck system for a project in South Wales some years previously, I knew the firm would offer a trusted, cost-effective service for this major scheme.

“Not all the bridges were produced or installed in the same way; some were on an acute skew, making installation potentially awkward. Bespoke corner panels were made, to reduce the amount of in-situ soffit formwork required. One of the seven bridges spans a railway line, which meant the entire bridge deck had to be assembled over the course of one night in order to minimise disruption to train timetables.

“Bison Precast’s own Omnia Bridge Deck lift system allowed us to lift up to eight concrete units at a time, which streamlined the process as much as possible. With the project approaching completion, principal work on nearly all the bridges is now finished, and I’m very happy with the results in terms of the work provided by Bison Precast.”
